Sneak is one of the most powerful skills in Skyrim, but players who want the defensive benefit from their light armor or heavy armor skill will suffer noise penalties when sneaking. This tree’s penchant for stealth is what makes it a popular candidate with rogue builds. Courage spells can help during the big siege battles during the Civil War questline, and, though they do not receive their own specific branch or upgrades, Muffle and Invisibility (both of which are especially handy for thieves) are also considered Illusion spells. To break it down, there are three major branches of the Illusion skill tree: Fury, Calm, and Fear.
While these have some situational benefits during combat, they really shine when the player is undetected. The game’s illusion spells are inherently meant to confuse and mislead enemies. Just like Skyrim’s Destruction magic has its pros and cons, so, too, does the game's Illusion magic. The reasoning behind Illusion being preferable for rogue builds is evidenced by its strengths and weaknesses. Illusion spells are something of a mixed bag, with some spells meant to avoid combat, while others meant to instigate it in equal measure. Restoration spells are for defense, supporting sturdier Wards, and stronger healing spells. While there are no Illusion spells that can deal damage directly, they can nevertheless be combined with other spells and weapons to devastating effect. Investing in the Illusion tree also allows for the game’s Illusion spells to have a broader range of uses, affecting more targets and adding additional play style options to confrontations throughout the game.
Players who want to rely on Skyim’s powerful Illusion magic will have little choice but to invest in its skill tree, otherwise, the effectiveness of the spells will not carry over into the mid-late game.
